iPads in the cockpit

There is a new piece of technology that pilots are beginning to use more and more, the iPad. If you think about it, it is a pretty good idea. There are apps that will give you the weather, show you maps and even record your flight information. Companies have even began to release accessories such as a thigh board which holds the iPad. I think this is a good idea for multi crew operations, but might get in the way of a single pilot in an already cramed cockpit. Other pilots have integrated the iPad into their instrument panel. It functions as a GPS, artificial horizon and even an airspeed indicator. I don't know if I would trust the iPad as a navigational tool, but I think it is quite an interesting idea.

Cargo Plane Crashes Near Karachi, Pakistan. November, 27

An Il-76 cargo plane crashed near Karachi, Pakistan just minutes after take off. There is believed to have been 8 people on board at the time of the crash. The plane was destin for Khartoum, and crashed into a building that is under construction so luckily no one was in it. Many people living in the surrounding area said that the crash was so loud they though that a bomb had gone off. I will update when more is learned about this incident.

Plane Crash outside of Cheneville Quebec

Another sad story, a man was killed today when the Cyclone 180 he was flying crashed into a mountain side just outside of Chenville, Quebec, which is just north of Gantineau. Very sad, just reminds us of the risks involved in flying. We will have to wait to hear the cause of this incident.

China to Open their Low Level Airspace to General Aviation

This is huge for aviation in China. This may also hurt many flight schools in Canada as many Chinese Students come to Canada for flight training. We will have to wait and see how this plays out.

Seneca College Plane crash east of Toronto kills 3

It has been a sad last few days for aviation. After todays safe ejection of the F-18 pilot, I have to share some bad news. A plane from Seneca college crashed killing all three on board. I am still waiting to hear more. My condolences go out to the families of those involved.

F-18 Hornet crashes near Cold Lake, Pilot Ok

F-18 crashed today around 1:30 CMT, near the Canadian Air Force Base at Cold Lake. The pilot ejected and is said to be ok, but we will have to wait to get the details. This is the second F-18 that has crashed this year in Canada, I think that the Canadian government should reconsider their plan to cancel the purchase of F-35s because there can't be many F-18s left.

BC and Yukon Webcams

I am sure that most pilots already know about this but for anyone that doesn't these cams are really good and helpfully when you are planning on going on a nice cross-country flight. There is a lot of cams of B,C a few in Washington state and the Yukon and even some in Alaska!

Check them out!

Apple Table

I heard a rumor that apple is designing a table for restaurants, so when you sit down a menu appears and then when you order wines and other things the table will tell you pairing to go with what you ordered.

I am wondering if this is true or not?

October Flight

CYVR

Squamish
Yesterday a guy I work with invited me to go flying, of course I agreed, so he rented a Cessna 172 for a few hours and we went for a cruise. We started off at YVR, which was so cool because I had only flown out of YVR once in a small wheel plane before. From YVR we headed to Sechelt(CAP3), did a touch and go, and then headed up Howe Sound to Squamish(CYSE). We did a few circuits in then stopped in Squamish and talked to some friends for awhile. After leaving Squamish we cut over the mountains to Indian Air. Once we got closer to YVR it was really busy so we were directed all over and then finally got cleared to land. It was a great flight,  and such a beautiful day to go. The whole flight was 2.2 hours.

Managerial Accounting Midterm

I have a big midterm coming up tomorrow night. Not really sure how well I am going to do. I know the concepts but Accounting midterms are always so hard, it is almost like no matter how much you know you will still get most of it wrong.

Sunroof Fixed

Just in time! I got my sunroof fixed this morning, no more plastic bag. I don't think I have seen it rain this hard in a while so good thing I got it fixed.

Cortes

About a month ago myself and two friends flew from Squamish(CYSE) to Cortes Island(CCI9). It was a beautiful flight, when we got to Cortes there is a resort there, and all of the staff were very friendly and helpful. I was a shame that we left Squamish so late that we couldn't spend much time checking out the island. I would recommend this flight to anyone it is about 1.0 from Squamish(CYSE), the only thing that some people may not like is that fact that it is a gravel strip and takes some skill. Also it is PPR and they ask that you leave a small donation for using the strip. I can't wait to go back and spend some more time there.

Shattered Sunroof

So today I am driving to school and all of a sudden I hear a really loud bang. I instantly thought that my windshield had cracked but when I looked it was all good. Then once I got to school I checked the hood, the roof and the sunroof, no damage. When I come out from class my sunroof has a hole in it and is all shattered.
